Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) are designed to assess nerves function and performed by stimulating them, in the limbs, with small electrical impulses and measuring their responses.
NCS are commonly used to help diagnose Neurological conditions such as:
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Ulnar Nerve entrapment
- Spinal disc herniation (Causing neck/arm or back/leg pain)
- Peripheral neuropathy (Due to diabetes or otherwise)
- Guillian Barre´ Syndrome
- Others
NCS can be applied to all age groups and harmless and have no after effects.
Most patients find them mildly unpleasant rather than painful.
Although patients who are fitted with a pacemaker can still have the test but should inform the doctor before hand.
Patients are advised to wear loose fitting clothing, keep their hands and feet warm and do not use skin creams or moisturisers.
